For Sylvia, is my photographic series in which I am exploring my life for the past couple months as my girlfriend and I prepare to become parents. I chose two distinct styles of photography in order to tell the story. Black and white still-life photos and color portraits. Each embodies different points of this journey we are on.
The black and white still-lifes are the quiet before the storm, they showcase the various states of our room which is also going to be the nursery in which our daughter lives for the first few months of her life. There is a level of anticipation in each photo, various baby objects can be seen either clearly or they are less obvious in some photos. It allows you to feel the absence of what is to come but also the promise of a new life yet to arrive.
The color portraits are in contrast to the black and white still-lifes, they are full of life and joy. The snapshot quality of the portraits grounds this series with the feeling of life and love. They celebrate both the new and old that is being explored while we prepare for the next chapter of our lives.
More than anything, For Sylvia, is meant to be almost like a family album, albeit a professional photo album, but a family photo album nonetheless. It has been a joyful but also stressful time in our lives and I wanted to capture both the good parts and the bad parts of becoming a parent because that is what life has been, ups and downs.
We love you so much already Sylvia and we can’t wait to meet you!
